Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another.” – Erma Bombeck

Our pupils are brought to KMA directly after their school day, and tuck into a delicious lunch before heading to their lessons or practice sessions. There is often some time before they are taken to their homes, during which they are expected to commence with school homework. KMA is always in need of volunteers to assist these youngsters with their school work. Consider donating your time once a week to these future professionals of South Africa.

Our busy school delights in complimentary activities such as soirees, concerts, workshops, and fundraisers. Your voluntary help at these events can take many forms and is invaluable when it comes to smooth execution. Contact our office to find out more.

Individual and Group Lessons

”Funded” pupils contribute a nominal fee per term to their tuition and KMA
subsidises the rest of the fee. The most cost efficient way to utilise funding
is in a group situation – thereby providing more opportunities to more
individuals at a time. As the groups organically diminish we identify
talented and committed learners who are then placed in sponsored individual
tuition.

For those who do not continue, at the very least they have experienced the joy of music, which they otherwise would never have been able to do. One a year
and funding permitting, we start new beginner groups resulting in a continuous cycle.

We invite our sponsors to adopt a pupil or a group or, simply contribute to general tuition. It is worth noting that a significant proportion of our individual
pupils are “paying pupils” from the more affluent areas of Hout Bay, which
we feel is a good reflection of the standard of our tuition.

At present we offer the Hout Bay community individual and group music tuition in woodwind (saxophones, recorders, flute, clarinet), brass (trumpet, trombone, French Horn and euphonium), strings (violin, cello and double bass), guitar
(contemporary, jazz and classical, and electric bass), piano, accordion, voice,
percussion (African and drum kit) and African Instruments.

Ensemble Work

We believe every young musician should explore and experience the joy of
playing music with others and to that end, we constantly seek opportunities to
develop ensembles for the pupil’s growth and pleasure.

At present we offer the opportunity to join our Junior Orchestra, Brass Band,
Children’s Choir and our flagship KMA Jazz Band. As these ensembles mature we take great pride in representing the youth of Hout Bay in performances at
functions, festivals, and other occasions. Our KMA Jazz band is a case in
point having been invited to perform in more than 30 events to date and in 2018
will be involved in the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival.

The African Instrument Project

Our locally crafted xylophones, chromatic marimbas, and djembe drums form the basis of our African instruments on offer. In addition to this, in 2017 South African Instrumentalist extraordinaire and Professor of African Instruments at UCT Music College, Dizu Plaatjies, has initiated instruction in a further 5 sub- Saharan
instruments at KMA, creating an extra mural music programme that we believe is the first of its kind anywhere in Cape Town.

Our long- term goal is to incorporate these instruments into our existing classical and contemporary ensembles to share and celebrate our heritage in all we do, creating a unique flavour to our performances.

Schools Partnerships

In our diverse communities, there is a never ending supply of young people who want to do music, and our dream is that every child is given this opportunity. We have established solid relationships with the 10 schools in our area from whom we receive applications on an annual basis.

These schools include – Sentinel Primary and Hout Bay High in Hangberg, the
Dominican Grimley School for the Deaf, Oranjekloof Moravian Primary, Disa
Primary and Silikamva High in Imizamu Yethu, Kronendal Primary, Ambleside School and the Hout Bay International School in the valley and Llandudno Primary.

In 2017 we commenced with running school choirs for 4 of these schools with a view to an annual choir festival celebrating the various school choirs in Hout Bay. The most promising members of these choirs will be invited to join the prestigious Hout Bay Youth Choir in 2018.

Instrument Servicing

As with any music school, our instruments need servicing and maintenance on a regular basis. This is a very expensive business in Cape Town!

Our successful 4-year partnership with the Expanded Public Works programme in the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has developed a basic instrument servicing division at KMA. We also offer this service to the general Hout Bay public and other community projects in and around Cape Town.
